Open Rank Scientist, EED/Gut Health Program, Disease Biology  

Key Responsibilities

  • Establish cellular models (regular monolayer, co-culture and 3D organoid culture) for gut disease target and tool evaluation.

  • Develop relative assays to evaluate compounds and any other potential hits.

  • Execute research plans, evaluate and conclude the data from the analysis, focus on drug discovery in various aspects of gut disease/health project.

  • Design and lead experiments to move project.

  • Provide biology and technology expertise involving examining new techniques to improve existing analysis and provide additional capabilities. Contribute to individual project(s) as well as the overall program.

Minimum Requirements

  • Ph.D./Master’s degree in Immunology, Cell Biology, Microbiology, Biomedical Sciences or related field.

  • Research experience in gut health/disease required, such as environmental enteric dysfunction (EED) inflammatory bowel disease, celiac disease, irritable bowel syndrome; intestinal stem cell and health, gut barrier, inflammation; host defense, microbiology, gut microbiota/Microbiome.

Scientist, Biophysics  

Key Responsibilities

  • The preferred candidate should have experience on Biacore SPR analysis and application either in academic labs or drug discovery industry. Experience on target-based screening with biophysics methods, structural biology, protein expression/purification, fragment-based drug discovery, ligand docking, or virtual screening, will be big plus.

Infectious Disease (various levels), Disease Biology  

Key Responsibilities

  • The duties of this position will involve supporting and/or leading a multidisciplinary team to develop innovative therapeutic drugs for infectious diseases such as TB or viral infections caused by HBV, DENV and ZIKV.

  • The candidate will use in vitro HTS assays to identify innovative drug hits and animal models to evaluate the efficacy of hits and the mechanism of action of these hits.

  • The candidate will work both independently and collaboratively in a matrixed environment to design, execute, interpret and communicate immunology studies for one or more projects utilizing good scientific judgment and strong team skills.


Minimum Requirements

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in appropriate discipline required (e.g., virology, immunology, cell biology, molecular biology).

  • 2-8 years’ experience (industry experience preferred).

  • Excellent verbal and written communication/Presentation skills, in addition to excellent organizational skills.

  • Expertise in current technology practices in viral immunology and molecular biology is required.

Scientist/ Investigator (HTS Assay Development & Screening)  

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop "automation-friendly" microtiter plate-based assay to ensure characterization and identification of small compounds from High-Throughput Screening (HTS).

    ○   Design,develop and validate various biochemical and cellular assays and adapt to automated lab equipment for HTS.

    ○   Biochemical assays include ELISA, alpha assay, FRET, HTRF, FP, TR-FRET, all sorts of functional readout of enzymatic activity and any innovative assay formats.

    ○   Establish cellular assays, such as creation of stable mammalian cell lines, reporter gene assay, high content imaging.

  • Data analysis and management using standard software as well as customized sophisticated software.

  • Communicate assay/screening results effectively with teams as necessary.

Automation Support Specialist (HTS and Compound Management)  

Key Responsibilities

  • Set up and maintain integrated and standalone robotic instruments used in HTS and Compound Management.

  • Perform initial troubleshoot when encountering instrument issues; resolve issues if possible. Escalate to and coordinate with vendor to resolve issues beyond own ability.

  • Carry out routine instrument QC; ensure all instrument meet performance specifications; address/correct issues if necessary.

  • Provide regular update of instrument status to users.

  • Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) and provide technical details of new instruments on the market; make recommendations for new purchase to meet operation needs.


Minimum Requirements

  • MSc or above in Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, or related fields with 3+ years of experience working in drug discovery in academia or industrial setting; or

  • BSc in Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, or related fields with 5+ years of experience working in drug discovery in academia or industrial setting.

  • Hands on experience using scientific equipment commonly employed in scientific research and drug discovery laboratories, e.g. liquid handlers, compound storage devices, incubators, washers, plate readers, or home-built instrument.

  • Demonstrated ability to set up and routinely maintain the above-mentioned instrumentations is preferred.

  • Experience interacting with scientific instrument vendors is a plus.

Key Responsibilities

  • The initial responsibility is to provide services for lab including lab supplies, critical sample storage, etc. according to user-requests.

Research Associate (Microbiologist), Disease Biology  

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform isolation and cultivation of microorganisms, drug resistance detection, susceptibility test and MIC determination as well as other biological experimentation and assay development for high-throughput screening.

  • Conduct microbiological experiments in BSL2 environment; most works involve a variety of human pathogenic bacteria and viruses.

  • Assist other scientists in microbial genetic manipulation and other routine lab procedures and maintenance as assigned by supervisor.


Minimum Requirements

  • Master-level graduate or outstanding Bachelor major in Microbiology, Molecular biology, Biochemistry or other related discipline.

  • Proficient in experiments related to classical Microbiology, such as microorganism cultivation, isolation and identification, bacterial staining, various microscopy techniques, growth curve, serial dilution and plate counting, drug MIC determination and statistical analysis of microbiological data. Strong knowledge and experience in basic molecular biology, such as cloning, DNA sequence analysis, protein expression, purification, and Western blotting.

  • Experience in cultivation of pathogens or anaerobes for HTS would be a plus.

Scientist/ Investigator (Host Immune Defense), Disease Biology  

Key Responsibilities

  • Study the host response and mechanism of action to infection in various infectious diseases including TB, malaria, viral infection and other public health diseases.

Parasitologists & Microbiogist (various levels), Disease Biology  

Key Responsibilities

  • Design screening cascades and implement HTS, hit triage and interpret the results of DMPK and toxicological profiling.

  • Work closely with medicinal chemistry, structural biology and DMPK teams and help select and advance screening hits.

  • Explore molecular targets (mode of actions) of hit/lead/candidate compounds.

  • Initiate, facilitate and organize domestic and international collaborations with academic and industrial partners.

  • Take a leadership role for data analysis and nominate strategies.

  • Mentor team members and help them trouble shoot.

  • Develop written reports and oral presentations for monthly and quarterly meetings and annual reports.

  • Present findings at international meetings and publish to scientific journals.


Minimum Requirements

  • Have a Ph.D in parasitology, microbiology, vector biology, molecular biology, chemical biology or any related area with minimum of 0-2 years of post-graduate research experiences for the Institute Fellow position and 2 to 7 years experiences for the Scientist or Investigator position. MDs who are interested in tropical medicine/public health or DVMs who are interested in tropical zoonotic/livestock diseases or comparative medicine are also encouraged to apply.

  • Have broad understanding of cutting-edge technologies and challenges in anti-microbial drug discovery for neglected diseases.

  • Have basic knowledge of pre-clinical drug discovery efforts including in vitro/in vivo assay design, compound profiling/triaging, understanding of pharmacokinetics and pharmcodynamics, and medicinal chemistry.

  • Have excellent oral and written English communication skills.

  • Be capable of working in an interactive and multidisciplinary team environment while conducting self-directed research within broader goals set by the group.

  • Possess excellent organizational skills and the ability to interact effectively with an international network of laboratories and disease experts.

  • Be meticulous in maintaining lab notebooks and data files.

  • The applicants should demonstrate a proven track record of scientific achievements and creative problem-solving skills.

Veterinary Research Associate (Comparative Medicine), Disease Biology

  • Maintain multiple immunocompetent and immunodeficient mice.

CSO/ Head of R&D/ VP of R&D  

CSO/ Head of R&D/ VP of R&D

The CSO/ Head of R&D/ VP of R&D will be working with the Institute CEO and Board to develop and manage the Institute's scientific R&D. The CSO/ Head of R&D/ VP of R&D will be responsible for developing and managing a world class research team to deliver drug candidates for diseases disproportionately impacting the world's poorest populations. Moreover, the CSO/ Head of R&D/ VP of R&D will be responsible for establishing and maintaining scientific collaborations with leading organizations in drug discovery and global health product development. The CSO/ Head of R&D/ VP of R&D will play a key role in engaging with GHDDI's Scientific Advisory Committee.
We are looking for a candidate with solid and visionary leadership skills and scientific ability, who is enthusiastic about working in a fast paced, dynamic environment. Additionally, this person should be passionate about taking a key role in shaping the vision and direction of a groundbreaking drug discovery institute. The candidate will have a Ph.D. in a relevant scientific discipline. A demonstrated ability to take initiative and engage in innovative problem solving is critical. A successful candidate must have a track record of success in broad drug discovery research and development, supported by publications and external presentations. Candidates must possess strong written and oral communication skills and the ability to drive results.


Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee all drug discovery projects and scientific operations to ensure the organization meets its scientific objectives.

  • Lead and manage the development of annual scientific goals, including obtaining and acting upon inputs from the Board of Directors, the Scientific Advisory Committee and collaborators.

  • Work closely with the CEO and other executives to ensure that the Board of Directors are well informed. Specifically, responsible for reporting and obtaining feedback on scientific objectives to the Board of Directors.

  • Forge deep, lasting relationships with GHDDI collaborators, including Tsinghua University, Calibr, and product development partners, and funding partners including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Beijing Science and Technology Innovation Group.

  • Work with the CEO and other executive officers to manage overall business objectives.

  • Set clear expectations, give appropriate autonomy, and guide team members; manage performance by providing feedback, guidance/teaching, and development opportunities.

  • Ensure up to date knowledge of developments in drug discovery research and practices, and timely dissemination of this knowledge.

  • Ensure that the integrity and profile of GHDDI within the scientific community are maintained at a high level, consistent with the requirements of the business.

  • Develop and ensure that systems, capabilities, and resources are in place to optimize productivity and probability of success of GHDDI scientific team.

  • Oversee the overall management of the laboratory team, such as by ensuring adherence to an agreed upon budget, building and developing a world class team, and identifying technology and other needs.

  • Represent GHDDI in the scientific community, including representing GHDDI at scientific conferences and communicating through scientific presentations and publications.

Qualifications Education

  • Ph.D. or equivalent in a relevant scientific discipline required.

DMPK, Platform  

Key Responsibilities

  • The individual will be responsible, working with CROs, to design, analyse, report pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamics data to support drug discovery programs.

  • Be responsible to assess ADME and physicochemical properties of NCEs, plasma protein binding, permeability, solubility, stability, aggregation, from early leads, preclinic candidate to clinic drug candidate, at all stages of drug discovery process.

Head of Preclinical and Early Clinical Development (Director/VP)  

Key Responsibilities

  • Key member of GHDDI Scientific Leadership Team.

  • Provides overall strategy and direction of preclinical and early clinical trials, processes and procedure.

Investigator and above, Medicinal Chemistry  

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the medicinal chemistry activities of one or more small-molecule drug discovery projects at target validation, hit to lead or lead optimization stages.

  • Work together with core team members across multiple disciplines to design and implement project strategies for the advancement of projects leading to the identification of high-quality preclinical candidates.

  • Independently design biologically active molecules and conduct SAR studies to meet the project goals; design synthetic routes and lead the internal or external chemistry team in the synthesis and characterization of drug candidates for the projects.

Minimum Requirements

  • Ph.D. in chemistry or related discipline.

About Us

Global Health Drug Discovery Institute (GHDDI) in Beijing is jointly founded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Tsinghua University and Beijing Municipal Government. GHDDI aims to build a transformative drug discovery and translational platform with advanced biomedical research and development capabilities. It is an independent, not-for-profit organization with a broad interest in addressing global health concerns, regardless of financial incentives, and intends to focus its efforts on tackling the world’s most pressing disease challenges faced by many developing countries.
